But then again, I could just get a T3i and wait a little bit, or save up for something even better in the meantime. But is the t3i too old to be getting into at this point? Should I just splurge and get myself something newer or better? I've been looking at the Panasonic G7 as a real upgrade, with 4k video and a lot of video-specific modes. My plan was to upgrade to the t3i by selling my D5100, then getting a better camera for video when the price of 4k cameras comes down. So I've been thinking of trading it in for a t3i, but I'm kind of hesitant. With HD video recording, great image quality, and a solid selection of lenses, the Nikon D5100 and Canon T3i are on the top of a lot of wish lists out there. No slow motion video modes on the D5100, 30fps is all you get. There's no way to adjust picture profiles and white balance on the fly (so for example if you want to adjust the white balance you have to exit video mode into photo mode, select the preset you want, go back into video mode and see how it looks.
There's no manual exposure control in video mode without a custom firmware. The Nikon D5100 is really terrible for video. Ever since I bought it, though, I've kind of regretted it. I'm a small-time videographer/filmmaker and I've been using a Nikon D5100 for the past few years for my various projects.
